NCC Daily Devotion: Week of 9/2/2024

Introduction

This summer, a group of 20 members from our church embarked on a mission trip to the American Indian Christian Mission (AICM) in Arizona. The trip was filled with moments of service, connection, and spiritual growth. Through small service projects, Vacation Bible School (VBS) programs, and deep interactions with the local community, our team experienced the profound impact of God's love and the Holy Spirit's work. Here’s a summary of the key highlights and lessons from the trip.

The Journey to Arizona

Our team flew to Phoenix and then drove to the AICM, a boarding school for children on the Indian reservation. Although the students were home for the summer, we engaged in various service projects around the campus, such as raking, moving furniture, and cleaning. Each afternoon, we traveled to the White Mountain Apache Christian Church to conduct VBS programs for the local children.

Service Projects and VBS Programs

Morning Service Projects

In the mornings, our team worked on small service projects around the AICM campus. Tasks included raking, moving furniture, cleaning, and sealing cabins. These activities, though physically demanding, were a way to support the mission and prepare the campus for the upcoming school year.

Afternoon VBS Programs

Each afternoon, we conducted VBS programs at the White Mountain Apache Christian Church. We picked up children from the reservation, brought them to the church, and engaged them in singing, crafts, Bible lessons, meals, and outdoor activities. These sessions were filled with joy, laughter, and meaningful interactions.

Personal Reflections and Experiences

Randy's Cost-Benefit Analysis

Randy shared his initial doubts about the trip, questioning whether the costs outweighed the benefits. However, he concluded that the benefits far surpassed the costs. The trip allowed the team to build relationships, understand the mission better, provide feedback, and share God's love with people living in poverty.

Deb's Eye-Opening Experience

Deb was struck by the poverty in the Apache area and the resilience of the community. She bonded with a little girl named Lydia and witnessed the strong role grandmothers played in holding families together. Deb emphasized the importance of compassion and the hope that the seeds planted during the trip would lead to lasting relationships with Jesus.

Emotional and Spiritual Challenges

Several team members, including Lindsay, shared the emotional and spiritual challenges they faced. The reality of the reservation's conditions was more severe than anticipated, and the spiritual darkness was palpable. Despite these challenges, the team experienced the Holy Spirit's presence and saw glimpses of hope and transformation.

The Impact on the Local Community

Building Relationships

The team built strong relationships with the children and adults they served. From painting nails to sharing Bible stories, these interactions left a lasting impact on both the team and the local community. The children’s smiles and laughter were a testament to the love and care they received.

Encouraging the AICM Staff

The team also had the opportunity to encourage the AICM staff and their families. By spending time with them, sharing meals, and participating in activities, the team provided much-needed support and companionship to those who dedicate their lives to serving the community.

Life Application

Embracing the Call to Serve

The mission trip to Arizona highlighted the importance of stepping out in faith and serving others. Whether it's through a mission trip or local outreach, we are called to share God's love and be a light in the darkness.

Questions for Reflection

1. How can you step out of your comfort zone to serve others in your community?

2. What are some ways you can support and encourage those who are dedicated to serving others?

3. How can you be more compassionate and understanding towards those who are less fortunate?

Challenge for the Week

This week, take a moment to pray for those in need and consider how you can make a difference in their lives. Whether it's through volunteering, offering a kind word, or simply being present, let the Holy Spirit guide you in sharing God's love.

Conclusion

The Arizona mission trip was a powerful reminder of the impact we can have when we allow the Holy Spirit to work through us. By serving others, building relationships, and sharing God's love, we can bring light to even the darkest places. Let us continue to be open to the Holy Spirit's prompting and embrace the call to serve, both near and far.
